Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017) sees the much-loved team of outsiders set off on another cosmic escapade, this time grappling with more profound issues like family, identity and belonging. The story opens with the Guardians—Star-Lord (Peter Quill), Gamora, Drax, Rocket and Baby Groot—still functioning as hired protectors but now fighting against a huge interdimensional monster for the Sovereign who are a race of golden-skinned people.

Upon completion of their mission, the fleet from Sovereign is after them because Rocket stole some valuable batteries. During their escape they are saved by someone called Ego who eventually declares himself to be Peter Quill’s dad. Anxious to unearth more about his lineage, Peter alongside Gamora and Drax go together with Ego to his planet whereas Rocket and Groot remain behind fixing their spaceship.

On Ego’s planet, Peter learns that his dad is a Celestial, an old powerful being who can control matter on a massive scale. Ego starts to teach Peter how to make use of his own latent Celestial powers, and Peter feels over the moon that he might finally have some ties to his past. But as it turned out, the lie of Ego’s benevolence came crashing down on him when he learned that his father was not as good as it seemed. The real plan of Ego is to have Peter transmit him into every corner of the universe such that he will destroy all other beings.

On their part Rocket and Groot accompanied by Yondu who serves as a surrogate father for Peter go through numerous predicaments in their efforts to save themselves from captivity and unify with other members of Guardians. In this regard, they must prevent the disastrous plans of Ego and face him together as one team. The clash only makes stronger bonds among them and at last they all stand together even without having any blood connection but because they are united by their chosen family.

With a bittersweet ending, Yondu offers his life to save Peter and thus affirms his role as the true father in Peter’s life. The movie ends with the Guardians moving on together through space, closer than they have been before and prepared for the future.
